Trauma Informed Care Professional Development

10:00 AM

Cost: $35

Registration: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/trauma-informed-care-tickets-463720278837

Thursday, January 12, 2023

9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (CST)

Virtual Workshop through Zoom

"Workshop Overview

Do you or your organization work with individuals who have experienced trauma and/or have a history of trauma? If so, this workshop is an excellent opportunity to learn about Trauma Informed Practice.

People who have experienced trauma are at risk of being re-traumatized in every social service and health care setting. The lack of knowledge and understanding about the impact of trauma can get in the way of services providing the most effective care and intervention. This can leave folks feeling misunderstood, unsupported, and even blamed. It can also perpetuate a damaging cycle that prevents healing and growth. This can be prevented with basic knowledge and by considering trauma informed language and practices.

Trauma Informed Care is an approach to engaging people with a history of trauma that recognizes the presence of trauma and acknowledges the role that trauma has played in their lives. At the core of any trauma informed service is empowerment and genuine, compassionate relationships. To achieve this, we must be open to awareness, self-reflection, and self- care...."

Data for Rural Communities: Taking Stock and Looking Forward Partner Event

02:00 PM

Cost: Free

Registration: Data for Rural Communities: Taking Stock and Looking Forward Tickets, Tue, Jan 17, 2023 at 2:00 PM | Eventbrite

"Data for Rural Communities: Taking Stock and Looking Forward

The availability of data to inform decisions and programs in support of rural communities has been a longstanding data gap, including a lack of commonly accepted definitions of ‘rural’ Canada. These gaps affect Canadians, as they hinder policymakers’ ability to create and implement programs and policies. In response to this, Statistics Canada tries to fill these gaps by integrating data from traditional and alternative sources. It aims to provide high-quality, granular, accessible, and timely information on social and economic issues, so to ensure that the needs and aspirations of rural Canadians are addressed.

Mahamat Hamit-Haggar, Ph.D., Chief, Centre for Special Business Projects from Statistics Canada will give a 30-minute presentation on the implications of data availability for rural communities, followed by a 15-minute Q&A period at the end of the session.

Registration closes on January 16th, 2023 at 2pm EST. If the registration deadline has passed and you still wish to register, please email bdrocha@northernpolicy.ca. Please note, registration after the deadline has passed is not guaranteed.

You will find the Zoom link for this event on your registration confirmation page (online) and on your confirmation email (scroll to the bottom of the email, under your tickets, on the "Additional Information" section).

Please do not share the Zoom link. Instead, please invite your colleagues to register. The event is free."

New Perspectives - Canada's next immigration crisis: how will we respond to the era of climate migration? Professional Development

07:30 PM

Cost: Free

Registration: Webinar Registration - Zoom

"We’ve all seen, and may have even experienced, the growing devastation extreme climate events have caused around the world, from historic floods in Pakistan, unprecedented droughts in China and Europe, and intense forest fires in Canada, Australia and even the Amazon.

As climate change worsens in the coming years, it is likely they will increasingly make areas of the planet uninhabitable and force many people to move both nationally and internationally.

This new era of climate-related migration will create new practical and policy challenges for local and national governments. Our upcoming New Perspectives event aims to identify what these challenges will be and what role Canada could play in addressing climate migration.

We have an amazing panel of speakers to discuss this topic. Warda Shazadi Meighen from Landings LLP is joined by Dr Alison Shaw from SFU and Patrick Michell, former chief of the Kanaka Band in Lytton, BC. They will also be moderated by Laura Lynch from CBC.

This event is in partnership with the Ismaili Centre of Vancouver and CBC.

We want to hear from you, so please send your questions in the field below to ensure the panel addresses them during the event."
