The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global migration, leading to sudden border closures, lockdowns, and quarantine measures. The annual immigration targets in many immigrant-receiving countries, such as Australia, Canada, the UK, and the USA, were severely affected. Some countries introduced harsh policy measures – such as the exclusion of temporary migrants from government financial support – while others initiated immigrant-friendly policy measures – for instance, the launch of temporary programs to facilitate the conversion of temporary status into permanent status. These changes contributed to shifting hierarchical categories among migrants, redefining “wanted and welcome” high-skilled migrants as “non-essential”.
As countries compete to attract highly skilled immigrants to fill the labour shortages, they have little information about how high-skilled migrants make migration decisions. There is now an urgent need to understand how policy initiatives and pandemic-related risks, uncertainty and ambiguities have affected the future of decision-making among highly skilled migrants and their families.
In this webinar, we will explore changes in immigration policies implemented during the pandemic in Canada, Australia, and the UK, and their lasting impacts on migration related decision-making. Questions to be addressed include:
- How have immigration policies relating to highly skilled migration been changed or altered in traditional immigrants-receiving countries such as Canada, Australia, and the UK in response to the COVID-19 pandemic?
- What are (or have been) the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and related immigration policy changes on migration-related decision-making among highly skilled migrants?
- What are the key takeaways of these pandemic-related immigration policy changes that researchers and policy-makers need to pay attention to in the post-pandemic times?

- How structures of inequity, privilege and oppression amplify and re-create trauma by prioritizing the needs of specific groups (i.e. white, able-bodied, cis-gender, non-Indigenous)
- Intergenerational and historical trauma and its effects in the context of engaging with those with lived experience of the health system
- The role of the healthcare system in inducing or perpetuating trauma among those who have past experiences of trauma
Participants will delve into practical approaches for creating safe and inclusive spaces to engage patients, caregivers, and communities using trauma-informed principles, as well as by partnering with those with lived/living experience at the individual, organizational and system levels."

Registration: Manitoba's Responses to Refugees: What Can We Learn? Tickets, Thu, 9 Feb 2023 at 7:30 PM | Eventbrite
"For centuries, Manitoba has been a destination for people who are seeking safety and a better life for themselves and their families– with mixed results.
It has been nearly 12 years since the beginning of the civil war in Syria, almost 18 months since the Taliban took over Afghanistan and nearly one year since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Behind these world headlines are people – people who are exercising their right to flee persecution and seek refuge. Many of these people have come to Manitoba. Their arrival has been met with different responses from the government, civil society and diaspora community – and there is much we can learn.
The Centre for Social Science Research and Policy is organizing a free roundtable discussion with academics, frontline worker and advocates (as well as people who identify as a mix of all three) where we will reflect on what has worked well, and not so well, over the past ten years to create better policies for refugees and others who are forced to flee their homes."

Description:
"A 2021 Statistics Canada study found that religion and spirituality play an integral role in the lives of newcomers. The report states that persons "born outside Canada are more likely to report having a religious affiliation, consider their religious and spiritual beliefs important to how they live their lives, and to engage in religious activities in groups or on their own".
This webinar discusses the importance of religion and spirituality for the mental health of newcomers and how to address religiosity in psychiatric care. The presentation will also highlight religious competence, cultural competence, and protective factors for religion and spirituality.

This talk looks how international migration has been shaped and reshaped by socio-economic and geopolitical transformation of the last 30 years. Migration has become more fragmented than linear, with multiple returns, new departures, and multiple destinations. Communication and transport technologies mean migrants are more connected with both homeland and destination society, as well as with global diasporas. The pandemic period of global immobility has increased migrants’ connectedness and digital ‘migration’ (people living in one place but working in another, fully online). New disruptions, including climate change, raise questions of individual migration vs community displacement; physical vs digital mobility; and complex drivers and motivations that undo the dichotomy between forced and voluntary migration. The talk takes us beyond concepts of risk, looking at how uncertainty as well as human agency in uncertainty shape international migration.

Registration for Webinar 1: Information Is a Settlement Issue | Webinar 1: Defining the Challenge Tickets, Wed, Feb 22, 2023 at 1:00 PM | Eventbrite
Registration for Webinar 2: bit.ly/R613Talk2
"Getting the right information at the right time is essential to starting life in a new country. In Canada, governments invest heavily in formal information and orientation services delivered by settlement professionals, but many newcomers still struggle to find the information they need, when and how they need it. Instead, they spend a lot of time and effort to source information themselves online and in person, from family members, community leaders and the internet, often increasing their frustration and confusion as well as their exposure to misinformation.
Refugee 613 is organizing a 2-part webinar series titled Information Is A Settlement Issue. We hope you’ll join us for this sector-wide conversation about how we deliver settlement information, what works and how we can do better.
Who should attend?
Frontline settlement staff, managers, policymakers, newcomers and any stakeholder who is interested in how settlement information is created, shared and found.
In these workshops, we will :
- share the insights of newcomers who have struggled to find the information they need
- facilitate interactive conversations on the information gaps and opportunities
- draw on lessons learned from Refugee 613’s Newcomer Info Hub project
- share practical advice and tactics for improving information delivery at the agency and individual level
Webinar 1: Defining the challenge
Date: February 22nd, 2023, 1 to 3 pm
This interactive webinar will outline some of the strengths and challenges of how settlement information is currently defined and delivered in Canada. We’ll hear from newcomers themselves about their search for the right information on their settlement journey, and guided breakout sessions will probe further to highlight what works and what doesn’t. By the end of the session, we’ll have collectively identified potential solutions and next steps to improve access to settlement information.
Webinar 2: Putting newcomers first in client communications
Date: March 8th, 2023, from 1 to 3 pm
What are some practical ways we can start to make changes at the service level to make information more accessible to newcomer clients? This session will share Refugee 613’s strategies and tips for building communications plans that put the client first. You’ll learn which questions to ask about preferred channels, languages and formats. You’ll come away with a template for rapidly creating your own step-by-step plan for communicating with your clients at the agency level, so that key information gets to the right person, at the right time and serves their needs - and yours.
