Switchboard, in partnership with Jobversity, is pleased to announce an upcoming webinar open to all refugee service providers, whether working at state agencies, resettlement agencies or affiliates, or other organizations.
What will this webinar cover?
Afghan newcomers bring a range of skills, education levels, and professional backgrounds to their new communities in the U.S. Some worked alongside the U.S. government or miliary and bring experience in high-demand industries like information technology, finance, engineering, healthcare, or logistics and operations. Finding work at one’s skill level can be difficult. Providers supporting these clients in their career journeys often encounter challenges related to providing job readiness coaching and support, navigating licensure and certification requirements, teaching “soft skills” like interviewing and networking, and navigating employer bias. This webinar will discuss specific barriers and opportunities facing Afghans with professional backgrounds as they seek meaningful career pathways and employment.

Registration: How to write an effective policy brief - Cerc in Migration and Integration - Toronto Metropolitan University (torontomu.ca)
About the workshop:
Policy briefs are becoming increasingly relied upon by policy makers to help them canvas a wide range of perspectives and evidence to inform their decisions. They are also an important tool to help researchers share their insights and evidence with a broader community and build a reputation as an expert. Ultimately, policy briefs are a critical step in making research results known so that the work will have impact in the wider world. Not all briefs are effective, however. Writing concise and persuasive briefs, and knowing how to best present the evidence, takes knowledge and practice. This workshop will review the audiences for policy briefs and their information needs, and will explore the best practices in writing and distributing the policy brief.
In this workshop you will learn:
- What is the role of policy briefs in the policy decision-making process?
- Who is the audience of a policy brief and what do we need to know about them?
- What are the key components of effective policy briefs?
- How do we best present evidence?
- What are the steps to writing a policy brief?
How this workshop will be delivered:
The interactive workshop will combine group discussion and time allocated for group and individual practice. Materials will be shared in advance and will form the basis for group discussions and individual work.

Registration: Social justice & mental health Registration, Fri, 14 Oct 2022 at 12:30 PM | Eventbrite
"Please join the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW) for an important discussion regarding the implications of a recent social work study. The event is open to the public; all are welcome to attend.
“Interrogating the Impact of Neoliberalism on Social Justice Approaches to Mental Health in Social Work” provides a critical profile of the landscape of social workers’ mental health service provision in Canada. This study expands on a Nova Scotia study reported in Repositioning Social Work Practice in Mental Health in Nova Scotia (2021).
The current study investigated three distinct yet related issues:
- The social discourses informing social workers’ beliefs about mental health problems, and how these beliefs affect their choice of treatment paradigm;
- How organizational ideologies and practices influence mental health treatment options; and
- The extent to which mental health services delivered by social workers challenge or reinforce neoliberal discourse on mental health.
Dr. Catrina Brown and her research team will begin with an overview of their findings. The team will then lead participants in several breakout discussion groups, as we discuss the implications for social workers in Nova Scotia.
The NSCSW Social Justice Committee will conclude our miniconference with an overview of our social justice and advocacy efforts, and engage our members in helping us to chart a path forward."

The ultimate goal of N4 is to better the experience of newcomers to Canada. In this webinar we will explore how reflective practice contributes to achieving that goal. Reflective practice involves being self-reflexive about our own actions and practices that are shaped by our assumptions and beliefs about relationships and how we treat others. It is also about being critically reflexive about our organizational practices, policies and structures that are themselves based on their own set of assumptions and values. Both self-reflexivity and critical reflexivity are essential ingredients for rendering our professional and organizational practices more responsible and responsive to the needs of newcomers.

Registration: Externalizing EU migration management policies • European University Institute (eui.eu)
"Join this webinar that will assess the externalisation of migration management policies in the European Union in light of refugee protection and human rights.
This Policy Meeting focuses on key issues related to responsibility and accountability of EU Member States and European Institutions policies externalizing migration management to third countries.
Illustrative examples of EU cooperation with various African countries include indirect forms of EU support through financial and operational assistance and trainings prioritizing interceptions and pull backs at sea, 'capacity building' on migration management and border surveillance and the criminalization of human smuggling and irregular migration."
These policies are increasingly coming along policy instruments aimed at facilitating mobility of asylum seekers and refugees through so-called "complementary pathways" which present highly selective and constraining features. These include for instance Emergency Transit Mechanisms (EMT), humanitarian corridors and private/community sponsorships.

Migration Brokers in (Im)Mobile Times
Co-convened by Brenda Yeoh, I. Rajan and Anna Triandafyllidou
"Migration governance is a multi-dimensional (social, spatial, temporal) process which develops in non-linear ways. Recent scholarly work has paid increasing attention to the role of intermediaries in regulating migration, whether they act as employment agencies, local brokers or government representatives. This workshop builds on this literature and seeks to carry it forward in two distinct directions: first, to reflect on whether and how the role of migration brokers is changing in the post-pandemic period; and second, to bring together the study of migration brokers in temporary, less-skilled migration with an analysis of their role in the migration of the highly skilled, including in our reflection international students, artists or athletes. This workshop considers the pandemic as a ‘critical juncture’ that shapes the role of the migration infrastructure in unexpected ways, while also exploring the interaction between migration infrastructure and migrant agency."
