Registration: Supporting Journeys to Resettlement Registration, Wed, 2 Oct 2024 at 1:30 PM | Eventbrite
"Description:
Newcomers often face a myriad of challenges including language barriers, cultural adjustments, housing instability, and social isolation. These challenges can profoundly impact their mental health and overall well-being. As professionals, our role is to support these journeys, providing the tools, resources, and community connections necessary to help individuals and families not only survive but thrive in their new environments.
In this webinar, we will explore an integrated approach to resettlement, emphasizing the importance of protective factors, intersectionality, community-based mental health support, and key principles of culturally sensitive crisis management.
After attending this webinar you will be able to:
· Identify what a protective factors approach entails and why it is essential for successful resettlement.
· Describe how various aspects of identity (race, gender, socioeconomic status) intersect and affect resettlement experiences and how intersectionality is applied in resettlement support.
· Define why a community-based approach to mental health support can be beneficial to newcomers with settlement challenges.
· Know the importance of cultural sensitivity and how to incorporate it into crisis intervention strategies.

A newcomer to Canada, whether an immigrant or a refugee, experiences many stressors when relocating to a new home. The experience is taxing on one’s mental health, and being resilient is just one step in the equation. Resources and supports must also be available to assist newcomers in managing the trauma that can occur in the immigration process. Shifts in family dynamics, loss of connection and loneliness, and the difference between expectations and reality can all take a toll on a newcomer’s well-being. As professionals working with newcomers, it is of utmost importance that intersectoral collaborations are used to promote our collective social responsibility so that newcomers can navigate the complexities of health and social care resources, address resource gaps, and promote mental health.
Join us on October 9, 2024, from 3 to 4 pm EST as we host Nancy Clark, Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Victoria, and Geoffrey Maina, Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Saskatchewan, as we hear about case studies from two community-based research projects, the lessons learned about intersectoral collaborations, and project implications for bridging knowledge to action to promote newcomer mental health.
Learning Objectives:
- - Gain a greater understanding of the healthy immigrant effect and its impact based on gender
- - Evaluate the dynamic shifts that can occur in newcomers and their families and its impact to mental health and well-being
- - Understand what can be done from one’s professional role to address the resources and supports necessary to help newcomers
Speakers:
- - Nancy Clark, Associate Professor, Nursing, University of Victoria
- - Geoffrey Maina, Associate Professor, Nursing, University of Saskatchewan

Join us for a webinar on PRAIDA, the only institutional Canadian program for the reception and integration of asylum seekers, boasting over 60 years of expertise in working with migrant populations in Quebec. The program has adapted over time to various migration waves and changes in Canadian and American immigration policies. More recently, the additional protocol to the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA) has raised new issues, particularly regarding access to asylum. Its application along the entire Canada-U.S. border has impacted the profile of the clientele served and traditional migration routes, necessitating new responses to address these challenges. This webinar will outline the unprecedented situation Canada is facing concerning the arrival of asylum seekers and how PRAIDA has adeptly adapted to meet the needs of these individuals.
Learning Objectives:
1. Provide an overview of the situation regarding the arrival of asylum seekers in Quebec and Canada.
2. Become familiar with the mandate and service offerings of PRAIDA.
3. Understand the impacts of the additional protocol to the Safe Third Country Agreement.
Speakers:
Alexis Jobin-Théberge, Senior Advisor, Conseiller cadre partenariat, Programme régional d’accueil et d’intégration des demandeurs d’asile (PRAIDA)
Alexis began his career working with asylum seekers and refugees in Brazil as an intern with an NGO (Missao Paz), before joining the PRAIDA team in 2018. He completed his higher education in international law and international politics, as well as in international development management and humanitarian action, in Canada and Brazil. His work focused on the policies of externalizing irregular migratory flows and the interception of migrants in third countries. At PRAIDA, he acts as Senior Advisor, responsible for partnerships and program outreach.
Karissa De Cotiis, Social Worker, Programme régional d’accueil et d’intégration des demandeurs d’asile (PRAIDA)
Karissa is a social worker with experience in child protection and refugee care. She currently works at PRAIDA in Montreal. She holds a bachelor's degree in international development and political science, and a master's degree in social work from McGill University. She worked for four years within the psychosocial follow-up team for unaccompanied minors (UASC), now serving as the team’s Clinical Activities Specialist.
