As Professor Anna Triandafyllidou writes in a co-authored piece for FPR, the COVID-19 pandemic has shaken a lot of the certainties about migration for major destination countries like Canada. But it has also led to important policy innovations. It led to unprecedented flexibility in terms of blanket work permit extensions and renewals, and it introduced new pathways to transition from temporary to permanent residency for different categories of migrant workers, front-line workers and international students. At the same time, Canada also increased its targets for permanent migration in a double effort to spur economic recovery — through an increased labour force as well as by boosting its competitive edge as a global magnet for talented migrants. How do we measure the success or failure of these policy changes? What have we learned from innovations to immigration policy in the past year? And, what comes next?
Join First Policy Response, CERC Migration and Integration at Ryerson University, and the Toronto Star for this timely discussion on Friday, July 9th from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. EDT.
Featured Guest: Minister Marco Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada
Panelists:
- Professor Anna Triandafyllidou, Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Migration and Integration
- Rupa Banerjee, PhD, Canada Research Chair and Associate Professor Human Resource Management/Organizational Behaviour Dimensions Chair, Ted Rogers School of Business Management Ryerson University
- Shamira Madhany, Managing Director, Canada, and Deputy Executive Director, World Education Services
- Mohan Doss, Director, Newcomer Programs & Services at WoodGreen Community Services
- Nicholas Keung, Immigration Reporter, Toronto Star (Moderator)
The event will begin with a feature interview with Minister Mendicino, followed by a moderated panel discussion.
There will also be an opportunity for breakout sessions and community gathering with academics, policy specialists, practitioners, and officials from municipal, provincial and federal governments.

Effective human communication plays a central role in human relationships daily. It is not surprising to see how interpersonal communication can affect our lives in different contexts. For newcomers to Canada, cultural settings, languages barriers, and other factors could be a burden to have and maintain dynamics especially in the workplace. Join us for a two-part webinar series that will move us towards creating effective interpersonal communication.
In part 2 of this webinar series, you will learn:
- The importance of creating a positive communication climate in relationships, and what would “supportive” climate could look like
- Best practices for managing conflicts in interpersonal contexts
- The dynamics of work, group and team communication
- How effective interpersonal communication can support diversity and inclusion

Ethical Considerations for Immigration Law
July 21 | CA MCLE: 1.5 total (1.5 Legal Ethics)
Like every profession, the legal industry has ethical standards practitioners must adhere to. These standards preserve the integrity of the profession, ensure practitioners are conducting themselves in a responsible manner and guarantee that clients receive the highest quality of services.
As an immigration legal practitioner, you may be faced with various ethical issues. How well you address these issues will depend on your knowledge of the rules and how they must be applied. This webinar highlights where to find the ethics rules for immigration practitioners and what they cover, as well as a discussion of ethical scenarios legal professionals may encounter.

More and more newcomers are moving to Canada for various reasons. The 2016 Census showed over half of the total immigrants identified in the survey are economic immigrants. These newcomers move to Canada for work-related reasons, gaining permanent residency through providing their skills and talents as well as interest in investing in a life in Canada. This type of newcomer, although not always discussed, will also require guidance on a new life in a new world, including being introduced to a new healthcare system, education system, taxes, and many other new experiences.
The following webinar will address the following:
- What is Canada’s determination system in accepting newcomers?
- How does acceptance of an economic newcomer differ from temporary foreign workers, international students, and the various types of refugees and asylum seekers?
- What are common difficulties faced by economic immigrants?
- How have economic newcomers changed in terms of demographics and skills throughout history?
- And much more

Hosted by Justine Abigail Yu and weareHUH
Part 1: Online Engagements - July 23 - 10am-11:30am PT (1pm-2:30pm ET)
Part 2: In-Person Events - August 13 - 10am-11:30am PT (1pm-2:30pm ET)
The weareHUH network is a free and open platform which offers tools & resources to start accessible activities that connect people together, break down stereotypes, and create & strengthen intercultural communities. In addition to the tools and resources on our website, this summer we’re connecting settlement service providers together to build a community of practice and offering free capacity-building workshops.
If the past year has taught us anything, it’s that none of us can exist alone. We can all appreciate the importance of building relationships - and recognize how difficult it is for people who are new to their communities and the local language. This two-part workshop series will dive into facilitation of online and in-person activities, and the methods and mindsets needed to create trusting and welcoming environments.
We’re offering two 1.5-hour workshops. You’ll get the most out of the experience if you come to both, but each workshop stands on its own as well. Recordings of both workshops will be available to weareHUH network members. Please note that while these events are for weareHUH network members, we are opening up a limited amount of tickets for non-network members to attend as well.
You’ll learn about:
- Building capacity on participatory techniques for digital engagement
- Ways to create a safe space for racialized folks to share their stories
- Designing workshops that are accessible to your audiences
- Who else is part of the weareHUH network

About this event
The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 ended slavery in the British Empire on 1 August 1834, freeing over 800,000 enslaved Africans in parts of the Caribbean, Africa, South America, and Canada. Emancipation Day, which occurs annually on August 1, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved peoples of African descent within the former British Empire. It should be noted that enslaved Africans and peoples of African descent in what is today known as Haiti had liberated themselves from slavery as of 1801, and, in 1804, established the world’s first independent Black republic and the first independent nation of Latin America.
Their efforts had a “cascade effect” across the Americas, providing additional impetus for global abolitionist movements, including the one that led to the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. With Emancipation Day now a national holiday in Canada, the Government has taken further steps to fulfilling the aims of the recognition pillar of the International Decade for People of African Descent.
In Partnership with BC Black History Awareness Society, Unity Centre Association for Black Cultures, Ethọ́s Lab is hosting an Emancipation Day event in Atlanthos. This will be an immersive experience featuring performances by Ndidi Cascade and Deanna Crawford, reflections from Youth and Community members about notable Black History sites in Western Canada such as, Hogan’s Alley, Amber Valley and Salt Spring Island.
This Event is best experienced using a VR headset or laptop. This event will also be streamed live.
The event may also be available in recording form, please ask Ethọ́s Lab for more information.
