About this event
The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 ended slavery in the British Empire on 1 August 1834, freeing over 800,000 enslaved Africans in parts of the Caribbean, Africa, South America, and Canada. Emancipation Day, which occurs annually on August 1, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved peoples of African descent within the former British Empire. It should be noted that enslaved Africans and peoples of African descent in what is today known as Haiti had liberated themselves from slavery as of 1801, and, in 1804, established the world’s first independent Black republic and the first independent nation of Latin America.
Their efforts had a “cascade effect” across the Americas, providing additional impetus for global abolitionist movements, including the one that led to the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. With Emancipation Day now a national holiday in Canada, the Government has taken further steps to fulfilling the aims of the recognition pillar of the International Decade for People of African Descent.
In Partnership with BC Black History Awareness Society, Unity Centre Association for Black Cultures, Ethọ́s Lab is hosting an Emancipation Day event in Atlanthos. This will be an immersive experience featuring performances by Ndidi Cascade and Deanna Crawford, reflections from Youth and Community members about notable Black History sites in Western Canada such as, Hogan’s Alley, Amber Valley and Salt Spring Island.
This Event is best experienced using a VR headset or laptop. This event will also be streamed live.
The event may also be available in recording form, please ask Ethọ́s Lab for more information.
